IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship

IMSA at Watkins Glen, Lime Rock out, Road Atlanta, Charlotte in

By Gary Becker
Covid-19 has claimed two more victims as the IMSA race weekends at Watkins Glen and Lime Rock Park have been relocated to the more politically relaxed Road Atlanta and Charlotte Motor Speedway.

According to IMSA, Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta will now host the six-hour IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race previously scheduled for Watking Glen on Sunday, Sept. 6. The three other IMSA-sanctioned series that were on the Watkins Glen bill of fare are also being moved to Road Atlanta. A four-hour IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge race will be held at Road Atlanta on Saturday, Sept. 5, with doubleheader races for both the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama and Lamborghini Super Trofeo races also planned for the now Road Atlanta weekend.

“On behalf of all IMSA stakeholders, we are grateful to Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta for accommodating this event weekend,” said IMSA President John Doonan. “Of course, we all wish we could have gone to Watkins Glen International as planned on Labor Day Weekend, but we look forward to returning to Watkins Glen and the Finger Lakes region again in 2021. Having two IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup races at the same facility in back-to-back months serves as the latest example of these unprecedented times.”

Tickets and camping packages for this event will go on sale to the public at noon on Monday, Aug. 3. Tickets can be purchased at

At the other end of the schedule change, Watkins Glen International released the following statement.

As a result of the ongoing pandemic nationwide, our NASCAR weekend has been realigned to the Daytona International Speedway road course August 14 – 16.

“This is an unprecedented time in the history of our nation and Watkins Glen International,” said WGI President Michael Printup. “The dynamic situation we are all confronting is impacting our daily lives and activities in unimaginable ways. While we are disappointed we will not experience NASCAR in New York this year, as we look broadly at the current pandemic in our country and around the world, we must focus first on everyone’s safety and well-being as NASCAR seeks the best way to continue delivering a remarkable on-track product week after week.”

Ticketholders for the Watkins Glen International NASCAR weekend will automatically receive a credit for the full amount of their purchase, plus an additional 20% of the total amount paid in their account within the next 5-7 days. The credit can be applied to a future NASCAR race event in 2020 or 2021 at a NASCAR-owned track.

For additional ticketholder options and more information, visit If a refund is preferred, requests are due August 7, 2020.

The Petit Le Mans, rescheduled for mid-October remains as-is.

“While the circumstances surrounding the move of this race from Watkins Glen to our facility aren’t ideal, we’re thrilled to give our fans and partners this amazing opportunity to be a part of a historic race weekend that hasn’t been seen here before,” said Rick Humphrey, president and general manager of Michelin Raceway. “After months without public events at the track, our staff is more than ready to welcome guests back for two classic IMSA endurance races over the next three months.”

At press time Lime Rock Park had not released a statement, or a least one we could find, but according to IMSA The Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL will host the WeatherTech Championship GT Le Mans (GTLM) and GT Daytona (GTD) classes in a 100-minute race as part of the NASCAR event weekend, Oct. 9-10. This event will replace the Lime Rock Park race previously scheduled for Sept. 11-12.

We will follow-up as more information becomes available.
