Recently the ChumpCar World Series changed their name to the ChampCar Endurance Series. The new name better describes the folks who participate in the series, who were never “chumps”.
On December 29, 2017 the new ChampCar Endurance Series presented the “New Year’s Eve-ish” ten-hour race at the famous Sebring International Raceway. The weather was un-Floridalike (is that a word?), with heavy overcast skies and cool temperatures. Despite the need to wear jackets, the teams endured the hardships and kept the racers on the track. The action on the track was intense as usual, and the event was run with the normal ChampCar precision.
Over 60 cars of all types took the green flag, and in typical ChampCar style, they sported many innovative features and distinctive livery. No expense is spared in the pursuit of safety, but in many cases extraneous parts of the cars, such as the entire roof, are removed in the quest for that last mile per hour. At the end of the event, the black Nissan 370Z of the Busy Guy Racing team, number 185, was declared the winner. Team Jacky Ickx came in second in their trusty Mitsubishi.
Hats off to the new ChampCar Endurance Series, all of the teams and competitors and the folks at Sebring Raceway. It was a great way to close out 2017. Be sure to include attending a ChampCar event in your “resolutions” for the new year!
