A look at the grassroots, SCCA Pacific Northwest Double Regional

Story and Photography by Kirk Myhre

The spring weather in the northwest has been great for the growing season but has left many race cars buried under covers or in garages until very recently. This was made evident by the string of shiny race cars waiting for their turn to be inspected by the SCCA tech crew in the early morning hours of race day Saturday.

The SCCA Pacific Northwest Double Regional was run on the weekend of May 27-28th at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington. This historic 2.25-mile, 9-turn road course opened its doors in 1960 and was a popular and pivotal stop on several major touring series including Trans Am and Can Am in the 60’s and into the 70’s. On this weekend, it was hosting a smaller crowd and car count but the enthusiasm was still there.

Out first, on the weekend, were the spec Miatas with a range of production class entries lead by a pair of white Porsche GT4 Caymans running incredibly quick laps in tandem. Following them, were a group of Radicals, a Formula Mazda and a Ford-powered Formula Sports Racer. The groups were topped off by a fierce pack of Formula Continentals lapping in the 1:27 range followed by one eager Formula V.

On both days, the mornings were reserved for testing, practice and qualifying while the afternoons were reserved for door-to-door competition. The Northwest region of the SCCA has yet to post the results of last weekend’s action but we won’t have to wait long for the next round. The Majors head to the Ridge Motorsports park in Shelton, Washington on the 17-18 and Spokane is up next for the Formula cars on the weekend of the 23rd.
