Story by Mike Beckers, Photographers Mike Beckers, Mike Bratton
On March 3-5, 2017 the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) and the Trans Am series teamed up to provide the fans with a weekend of classic racing cars and thundering racing action.
SVRA presented fields of Porsche 356s, 911s, 60’s and 70’s era Detroit muscle cars and endurance racers like the Ford GT 40 and Lola T-70. Throw in some sports cars like MGs and Triumphs and the occasional BMW and Alfa Romeo and you have the recipe that will satisfy any racing enthusiast.
The Trans Am series hits all the right buttons with its huge fields of closely matched cars with V-8 engine power. In addition, the fans can identify with the Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers that make up the bulk of the series.
The SVRA Races were exciting and the fans were able to see the cars in the paddock and on the track. There is no better “automobile museum” than a vintage racing vent. The owners and crews are rightfully proud of their cars and glad to tell you the stories behind them.
Trans Am brings the look of street cars to the track, but under the skin they are pure racing machines. The TA2 class is always a dogfight and at this event the race was red flagged for the result of racing that was a bit too close. The result? A seven-car crash. Few events can match the spectacle of a big field of gut rumbling V-8 Trans Am cars.
Be sure to check out the SVRA and Trans Am events in your area.
