Classic 12 Hour at Sebring

Story by Gary Becker/Photographs by Gary Becker, Mike Beckers

Chamber of Commerce weather met the competitors and fans at the the Classic 12 Hour at Sebring, Pistons and Props, presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network and Classic Motorsports. A respectable number of motorhomes, camping trailers and tents lined the outside of the Sebring International Raceway as 110 entries battled each other and the legendary "bumps" of the historic race course.

In addition to plenty of classic race cars there was also a display of vintage aircraft, appropriate as tracks grounds were once called Henderson Field, a training base for the Army Air Corp during the WWII. Vintage Planes such as a BT-9, P40 Warhawk (pictured below), a Valiant Vultee BT-15 and two Stearman PT-17s, in addition to Beech C-45 named "Beech Baby" were on display.

On track action saw the 1969 No.10 Lola T70 of Gerard Lopez and Frantz Wallenborn lead Group A. In Group B went to the Heritage Motorsports 1973 No.131 Porsche 911 RS of French co-drivers Gilles Boyer and Franck Rav took the honors. In Group C/D the 1996 No.4 Riley & Scott Mk III prepared by GMT Racing, Rick Carlino and Derek Jones scored the win. Group D honors went to Dutchman Theo Ruijgh in the 2000 No.114 Porsche 996 GT3R. The GMT Racing 2007 No.18 Pescarolo Judd LMP of David Porter scored the Group E victory. Group F overall victory went to the 1974 No.51 Porsche 911 RSR of Hartmut von Seelen who co-drove with KMW Motorsports owner Kevin Wheeler.

The 2017 HSR racing season begins right back here at Sebring International Raceway, February 17 - 19, with a new event that was announced at the Classic 12 Hour at Sebring. Visit in the coming weeks for more information.
