Ruman clinches Trans Am Championship and HSR shines at Daytona

Story and photographs by Mike Beckers

On Veteran’s Day weekend the Trans Am Championship Series and Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) presented a weekend of racing action at the historic Daytona International Speedway. For Trans Am it was the last race of the year and two of its classes, TA and TA2 had not determined their champions.

In TA, the top class, the competition was between the 2015 Champ Amy Ruman and Paul Fix. They started together at the front of the pack. Fix ran into difficulties, but Ruman still had to race hard for the win and her second Championship in a row.

The TA2 race was intense as is normal for the class. Shane Lewis came home first, followed by Adam Andretti and Dillon Machavern. By finishing fourth Tony Buffomante clinched the TA2 championship.

HSR delighted the fans with its variety of vintage racers and two full days of racing action. Many fans took the opportunity to see the cars up close in the paddock and garages as well as at speed on the track.

No matter what your preference is in road racing machinery, there was a car at the event to pique your interest. All the entries were superb examples of their type, and were driven with gusto. Some of the cars were from the European Masters Series, and we hope that this partnership with HSR will continue into the future.

As 2016 winds down, and we endure the Holidays, it is time to start thinking about next year. If you are a fan of the classic race cars of yesteryear, be sure to check the schedule and attend an HSR event in 2017. And if you like hard charging road racing with big thundering Detroit V8s, you should check out the Trans Am series. As always, hats off to the great folks at HSR, Trans Am and Daytona International Speedway.
