Starworks Ford Riley takes Rolex 24 at Daytona pole

Ryan Dalziel of Orlando, Fl., posted a fast lap of 126.741 mpg around Daytona's 3.56 mile long road course which was fast enough to claim the pole starting spot for the 24 hour race. Dalziel will team with Allan McNish, Lucas Luhr, Alex Popow and Enzo Potolicchio on the No. 8 car, which was assembled in the last few weeks.

Yet another green company backed by the Obama administration has gone bust. Ener1 has filed for bankruptcy protection after its subsidiary, EnerDel received a $118 million stimulus grant from the energy department. EnerDel makes lithium-ion batteries for electric cars such as the Chevrolet Volt. EnerDel has received $55 million of the grant. Competition from China was cited as the reason for the company's failures.

Sky Sports is reporting that former Williams F1 driver Rubens Barrichello will test an IndyCar for KV Racing at next months Sebring test session. Barrichello was replaced at Williams by Bruno Senna.

Toyo Tire recalled select Toyo® Extensa® A/S tires distributed to retailers in the United States that may have been produced with a kink at the bead area of the tires. Under certain circumstances, the kink may eventually lead to a crack in the bead area, which is near the rim. If a crack develops and is left undetected, the tire may fail, potentially causing loss of vehicle control and a crash. Tires involved in the recall are Toyo® Extensa® A/S, P225/60R16 97T, Tire Id numbers 73A6H2N3809 through 73A6H2N4410.

Canadian Paul Tracy will drive Doran Racing's No. 77 Combos/Circle-K Ford/Dallara in the Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 28-29. Tracy will co-drive with Dr. Jim Lowe and brothers Burt and Brian Frisselle in the Doran Racing Ford/Dallara.

Dreyer & Reinbold Racing is adding Oriol Servia to the team full-time for the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series season. The Spaniard is coming off of an impressive 2011 season with Newman Haas Racing in which he qualified third for the Indianapolis 500, recorded eleven top-10 finishes, was one of three drivers to be running at the finish in all 17 races, led all drivers in laps completed (2,103 of 2,011) and was the only driver to finish in the top-10 in the first five races of the season. Servia finished 4th in the overall IZOD IndyCar Series championship.

Gianpiero Moretti, founder of the Italian equipment company MOMO (for Moretti-Monza) and long time endurance racer, passed away Saturday at the age of 67 after a long illness at his home in Milan, Italy. Moretti was a regular on the IMSA Camel GTP circuit.

SPEED will cover the Rolex 24. Coverage begins with 15-and-a-half hours of coverage which will be enhanced for the first time by continued streaming on its web site. The live broadcast kicks off with a one-hour pre-race show at 2:30 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Jan. 28, and continues with the opening seven-and-a-half hours of the race, from 3:30-11 p.m. SPEED.com will cover the night action with a camera located atop the grandstand, several stationary cameras, a running leaderboard and audio commentary. SPEED television coverage resumes at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, running through 4 p.m. – including 30 minutes of interviews following the checkered flag.

Recall - 2004-05 Ford Freestar, Mercury Monterey, automatic transmission torque converter output shaft may fail causing a sudden lose of power. Ford will replace converter free of charge beginning second quarter of 2012. Owners can call 1-866-436-7332.

Recall - 2001-02 Ford Escape built 10/22/99 through 7/19/02 Brake Master Cylinder reservoir cap may leak on ABS wiring connector which could lead to corrosion, melting, smoke or fire. Ford will replace cap and modify wiring. Replacement will begin Jan. 22. Parts may be in short supply and owners are advised to park their vehicles outside until service can be completed. Owners can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.
